Lessons in Cleaning: Find Your People, Reach your Goals

A friend and I debated the merits of Dawn versus Palmolive. Things not discussed unless you are one of us. Chomp Wall cleaner, amazing for cleaning walls, scuffs, finger prints all gone. Rejuvenate, the carpet correct, makes those matted spots in high traffic area look good. If you clean most likely, the grout is not dirty, it’s stained. No amount of bleach, steam or scrubbing is  will change that;  use a grout pens and voila, perfection. Grease stains on clothes – a dab of Dawn…ok, this is where the debate came in. This is not about cleaning, but about finding your people. Most people could care less about the aforementioned. However, for those of us who love the shark vacuum, grab of cup of coffee and let’s talk.

If you want to do something, who are you around? If your goal is a to be a competitive swimmer, being around competitive ice skaters isn’t gong to help you in that pursuit. There are always anomalies and that one exception, but come on top ranked snow skiers aren’t in Tahiti. When I dared call myself a runner, I got tips from other runners or shoes, socks, what to eat, how to train. So, what happens if you consider this in career pursuits, or even life pursuits? Who are you around?

Psst, you’ve got to be around people who are doing what you want to do. Be around them? This most likely isn’t your mentor. These are people you do things with, interact with on a personal level. You socialize with. Every Wednesday, a group of us would go to coffee after yoga, There were 3 of us students and 1 yoga teacher. Five years later, all four of us were yoga teachers. Who are your people? If this is a career situation and you are not where you want to be, ask yourself, are you socializing with people who do what you want to do? This may take effort if you realize you don’t anyone. You have to do the work to find them and know it is a sort process. Like trying on shoes, something may look like a fit and it’s not. So, how committed are you to do a thing?

This week, maybe reflect on this idea. Understand, this doesn’t mean exclude people. Observe and notice. What conversations do you key into, when does an interaction spark you into action? Artist residencies provide an immersive experience to rejuvenate and inspire. This week, consider what a residency would look like for your goals.

  1. Great article…I agree it’s so hard sometimes to find other like minded people in real life. The older you get, people are not as open to making new friends and how do you get a mentor at an older age in life?! But it’s true if you see yourself in a space, you must immersive yourself and find your people.
