Lost Connection, Weak Signals and Refresh

I am moderating a panel entitled your Network is Your Net Worth on Monday and thought about how our efforts to network run parallel to “getting online.”For instance, just because a network appears to be available, does not mean you are connected. When you check settings, there is a list of networks available. Some have strong signals, some are weak. Some require a password and some don’t. Some are free and some cost. The same applies to networking in life. You see people, but, that does not mean there is a connection.

Your request to connect has to be accepted and that can vary widely between people on what that is and what that means. So, keep in mind, just because you did an email, a direct message, or a LinkedIn, does not mean you have an authentic or authenticated connection. Authentic are those genuine connections. When, I will hear someone lament, “I reached out to <insert name> and got no response.” I wonder what kind of “connection” it is and think, “they don’t know you, they don’t owe you.” It is like an available network that appears in your settings. You can try all you want, but you are unable to join without a passcode.

What about the bigger question? What is your definition of networking? How would you explain it someone? Pause and consider your answer. Did your response/explanation, reference anything about the opportunity to help other people? Just some things to think about this week.
