I have truly struggled that in spite of lies, apparent cognitive decline and nonsensical policy statements, Donald J Trump still remains solidly over 45% in polls. Despite over 100 ex Republicans officials who have endorsed Harris and declared DJT unfit for office, he is still above 45%. Despite 34 felony convictions and a spate of legal problems he is above 45%. I can even concede to the fact that the tax cuts will end for people making over $400,000 a year, but that is around 1% of the US population; if we do households, it’s about 1.8%. The bottom line, the explanation that chills me to the bone, it’s racism.
In the presidential debate this week, he boasted a lie that Haitian immigrants in Ohio are eating pet cats and dogs, because he is a racist. In the same debate, he expressed no regrets for calling for the death penalty for 5 Black kids even though they were found innocent in the Central Park Jogger case, because he is a racist. He began his political career, which had not existed prior, by spreading the Obama birther lie, because he is a racist. In an Oval Office meeting, he called African countries “shit hole” countries, because he is a racist. He called neo-nazis “fine people” after they marched in Charlottesville, screaming “Jews will not replace us!” because he is a racist.
At this point, the racism is obvious. How else does it make sense that 48 percent of registered voters in last week’s Fox News poll say they have no problem putting Donald Trump back in the White House?
Who are these people who look the other way when their candidate tells a bold lie about Black immigrants eating a mostly white Ohio town’s cats and dogs?
I wrote a post 6 years ago, Sweet Home Alabama: King, Wallace, Trump & Racist Adjacent. It was on how we have allowed bad behavior in the past tempered with “it was the time.” Is now the time to stop?
