A Question of Uninformed Versus Stupidity

Dutch Oven with Little Handle Mitts

The Touch ID does not work on my Apple MacBook Air. I baked a loaf of bread this week: I was cautious as I slid the ridiculously undersized handle mitts on and slowly pulled the 15 lb (6.8 kg) Dutch Oven from the oven where the bread had baked for 40 minutes at 450oF (232.2o C.) I sat the pot down and anxious to check the bread, I grabbed the lid. Dutch Ovens retain heat and the lid quickly burned my right hand causing me to fling it into the backsplash after which it bounced on the floor; all while I multitasked and screamed in my outside voice.

Five days later, I still can’t use my fingerprint on my Apple MacBook Air. It’s been clear over the past few days, I have a password for a lot of things that I use Touch ID for that I can’t get to. Yes, I can use iCloud chain recovery, but mostly it is easier to go to my iPhone or iPad which uses facial recognition.

When a device ask if you want to add another fingerprint, most people know to use a fingerprint from both hands. I did not. I got indignant when asked, why would I want someone else to have access to my MAC. At the time I thought this a feature for maybe parents or something. Nope, common sense backup for potential injuries.

This reminded me of how often you have solutions right in front of you that you don’t see or appreciate. For other things, you just misunderstand the use. The conundrum is, you’ll never know the frequency at which this occurs.

I often hear someone complain and in my head, I want to explain why. Alas, that would be impolite unless someone directly asks me. It reminds me of how much I don’t know and possibilities I have not considered as much as I don’t want to admit it. There is grace in to distinguished between uninformed and stupid. Picking up the lid without a mitt, stupid. Not adding another fingerprint, uninformed.

This week, consider uninformed versus stupid.

Note: No bread was harmed in the flinging of the lid.
