When Democracy Dies: Two Truths and a Lie

There was another assassination attempt on Donald Trump. I am not a fan of the man, but I had to pause and postpone the scheduled post. This madness needs to stop. While there have been strong reactions through out the political spectrum, can there be a collective poise to consider what if the situation was reversed? Can the rhetoric tone down?

I made a comment, really a joke in my mind, that it was not a good idea for DJT to post on Truth Social, I hate Taylor Swift. I then thought of the consequences of the woman who started the Facebook post about “…eating the cats, eating the dogs” and the aftermath. Bomb threats, schools closures, the taunting of children and the misrepresentation of legal immigrants. While it seems ridiculous to think the only scenario in which the Swifties would be responsible for an act like this would be in the punch line of a comic routine, crazier things have happened.

Rumors and theories take root quickly. Story telling is what makes us human. But distinguishing truth from fiction as far as your emotions go? Answer this, when you are watching a movie, and you know it’s a movie, are you still on the edge of your seat? Does your heart beat still increase? Yes. Logically you know, you’re OK, but you are caught up in the story.

Sometimes you need to disengage from the story. Think if the situation were reversed. This can be difficult with t reckless lies, vile statements and prejudice without compunction. But, you can’t expect another side to listen you you if you can’t listen to them. Is truth, honesty and fairness a thing of the past? This week, consider, how to move forward
