No yoga, no reading, no writing, some people go on a vacation, I go on an Olympic Binge Watch. While some get an adrenalin rush from action movies, I am on the edge of my seat with the Olympics. Nothing like the excitement of Kristen Faulkner, a US women’s cyclist, a substitute, not even slated to race, winning gold. Simone Biles is crushing it and Katie Ledecky is getting medal after medal. But there are moments of heartbreak, falls, missteps. The French Pole Vaulting incident. Julien Alfred winning the gold medal, the first medal ever for Saint Lucia. OK, I’ll stop now, Like the tagline for ABC Wide World of sports used to say, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
I used to watch the Olympics with my dad. We were watching Sugar Ray Seals going for the gold in boxing. I had no idea my dad had ever boxed until he started describing his failed boxing career. I can’t remember if he was flyweight (115 pound limit) or featherweight (126 pound limit.) My dad was 5′ 7″ and was always small. In his words, you always hear little old man, so, that’s the key to longevity, stay small. The Olympics, for me, are a time of memories when I can cherish the small moments in between.
So, yes, for a variety of reasons, I’m on break. The 100 meter final with Noah Lyles is about to start. This week, consider, leaning into joy and cherishing the small moment in between.
