The NCAA Basketball Playoffs started this week. It’s my spring break, spring cleaning, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. This week’s dose of madness, y’all, hearing loss leads to dementia. I’ve read recently about cross word puzzles, journalling and the likes aimed at people my age and older to stay mentally acute, but I’d not heard this before until I watched the documentary, Going to Mars in preparation for An Evening with Nikki Giovanni. If you are a fan, the evening was amazing. Back to business:
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that older adults with greater severity of hearing loss were more likely to have dementia, but the likelihood of dementia was lower among hearing aid users compared to non-users.
New Study Links Hearing Loss With Dementia in Older Adults
Nikki said in the documentary, the part of the brain that is activated by interpreting what we hear shuts down with hearing loss and she advocated hearing aids. The research is in process for Hearing aids slow cognitive decline in people at high risk-, but, it seems to be worthwhile. OK – back to basketball – The University of Tennessee Vols!!!, That was a tight one with Texas, but the right UT, the right orange and white, came out on top, Go Vols.
