Do Caterpillars Know They Will Become Butterflies?

I was in class, using a notepad with inspiring, tear off quotes. I become totally fascinated with the concept of caterpillars. When they go into the cocoon, do they think it is a sarcophagus, like “yo man, this is it, I’m out.”  Or is the caterpillar thinking spa treatment, “it’s my time to get a new outfit and fly up out of this situation.”  This week, consider, do caterpillars know they will become butterflies; do they know their ending? Does it make a difference?
